Preferred Flight Procedures – Half Moon Bay Airport

Our goal is for all of our pilots to utilize a Friendly Approach toward our neighbors and residents.
Help minimize your impact by flying our voluntary noise abatement procedures.

Half Moon Bay Airport

Half Moon Bay Airport (HAF) neighbors are extremely sensitive to aircraft noise. A particular annoyance is touch-and-go operations—especially when a single aircraft performs more than five (5) in a row—to those living adjacent to the airport.

Airport staff request that pilots limit the number of touch-and-go operations at HAF to five (5) or fewer per flight.

Pilots’ cooperation is also requested in observing these additional noise abatement procedures at HAF to reduce noise impacts on airport neighbors:

  • Reduce power/RPM as soon as safe.
  • Begin right crosswind turn as soon as safe (below TPA).
    • If able, turn before the end of the airport property to avoid overflying homes in Moss Beach and Montara.
  • Maintain Traffic Pattern Altitude (TPA) on downwind to reduce impacts for residents in El Granada.
  • Weekdays: Do not perform touch-and-go or full stop taxi-back operations earlier than 8:00 a.m. or later than two (2) hours after sunset.
  • Weekends & Holidays: Do not perform touch-and-go or full stop taxi-back operations earlier than 9:30 a.m. or later than 6:00 p.m.
  • Right Traffic for Runway 30, and Left Traffic for Runway 12.
  • Reduce power/RPM as soon as safe and practical.
  • Begin crosswind turn (below TPA) as soon as safe.
  • No stop-and-go operations or intersection takeoffs.
  • Maintain pattern altitude (1,000’ MSL) until necessary to descend for landing.
  • Arrival from the west, fly overhead the airport at 1,500’ MSL; continue outbound until clear of the traffic pattern and make a normal 45° entry into the downwind leg at 1,000’ MSL.
  • Use caution for aerobatic activity southwest of the airport over the water between 1,500’ MSL and 4,000’ MSL.
  • Unexpected turbulent conditions may be encountered while on final approach to Runway 12.
  • Avoid flying over the hospital located just north of the airport.
  • Avoid flying over homes whenever possible.
  • Aircraft over 12,500 lbs. prohibited.
